The Edison Study: Comparative Management Cost Study: Oracle Database 10g Release 2 and IBM DB2 Universal Database 9.1, is now available.
STUDY DETAILS
Database administrators (DBAs) can perform typical administrative functions in 38% less time when using Oracle Database 10g Release 2 compared to IBM DB2 UDB 9.1.
Oracle Database 10g Release 2 requires 35% fewer steps for the same set of standard RDBMS tasks than IBM DB2 UDB 9.1 using Edison's metric for complexity assessment.
Benefiting from increased DBA productivity due to lower complexity and higher efficiency cited above, businesses could save up to $31,654 per year per DBA by using Oracle Database 10g Release 2 rather than IBM DB2 UDB 9.1.

Oracle Vs SQL Server
Edison study: Oracle extends DBA productivity advances over SQL Server 2000 and 2005
An independent Comparative Management Cost Study from the Edison Group proves Oracle Database 10g offers superior manageability, resulting in significant advantages and cost savings over Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and 2005.
The latest report demonstrates that Oracle's manageability advantage over SQL Server has increased since the last comparison.
In the previous study, Oracle Database 10g Release 1 had a 30% time advantage and 20% complexity differential with Microsoft SQL Server 2000, compared to the 38% time and 30% complexity differential that Oracle Database 10g Release 2 now holds over SQL Server 2005.
In the side-by-side comparison Oracle Database 10g beats Microsoft SQL Server 2005 because with Oracle:
--> Typical DBA functions are 38 percent faster
--> Requires 30 percent fewer steps, making it less complex
--> Businesses can save up to US $31,664 annually per database administrator (DBA)
With this study, Edison Group shows that DBAs can expect to be more proactive in dealing with emergencies and have more time to address strategic issues like database architecture requirements, while businesses can expect to reduce their cost of managing enterprise database systems by using Oracle Database 10g.

Overview of PL/SQL Programs(PL/SQL) 1 :

Overview of PL/SQL Programs :

1) Describe a PL/SQL program construct
2) List the components of a PL/SQL block
3) List of benefits of subprograms
4) Describe how a stored procedure/function is invoked

==> Named blocks can be divided into three types : Labeled

Label blocks are anonymous blocks with a label that gives the block a name. Label allows you to refer to variables that otherwise would not be visible.

Subprograms consist of procedures and functions. They can be stored in the database as stand alone objects , as part of a package , or as methods of an object type.

Triggers consist of a PL/SQL block that is associated with an event that occurs in the database. Triggers are executed implicitly whenever the triggering event occurs. The event can be DDL,DML or DCL.

==> List the benefits of subprograms :

Subprograms are named PL/SQL blocks that can be called with a set of parameters. Procedures and Functions collectively known as subprograms.

=>Subprograms let you break a program down into manageable, well defined modules.

=>Subprograms promote reusability. Once created, it can be reused in any number of applications.

=>Subprograms promote maintainability. You can change the internals of a subprogram without changing other subprograms that call it.

=>Subprograms can make your code even more reusable and maintained by grouping the subprograms into a PL/SQL package.

Many database applications are built using either a client/server or 3-tier model. In client/server model , the program sends requests to a database server for information. If this request done using SQL, it result in many network trips, one for each SQL Statement. Several SQL statements can be bundled together into one PL/SQL block and sent to the server as a single unit. This results in less network traffic and a faster application.

==> Describe how a stored procedure/function is invoked :

A procedure call is a PL/SQL statement itself.
Functions are called as part of an expressions.
VAR_NAME := Func_Name(PAR1,PAR2…);

To execute a procedure the user should have EXECUTE privilege on that object.

Grant Execute on proc_name to user_name;

If the user has execute privilege , he can execute the procedure even if the user does not have privileges on any of the tables that procedure uses.

The syntax used to execute a procedure depends on the environment from which the procedure is called. In SQLPLUS, a procedure can be called using the execute command, followed by procedure name. Any arguments to be passed to the procedure must be enclosed in parentheses following the procedure name.

Execute PROC_NAME(2,’BABU’);

The above command will execute proc_name procedure with
2 and ’BABU’ as parameters.
Within a subprogram the procedure can be called without the execute command.
To execute a procedure owned by another user, you must either create a synonym for that procedure or reference the owner’s name during the execution,

Execute owner_name.proc_name(2,’BABU’);

When executing remote procedures, the name of a database link must be specified.

Execute PROC_NAME@rem_db_link(2,’BABU’);

CALL Statement :

This can be used to call both PL/SQL and java subprograms. Since January 2005, Oracle has not had to release an out-of-cycle security alert for its products.
That record ended this week with the public report of a serious vulnerability in Oracle's BEA WebLogic Web server, which rates a 10 on the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) scale. Oracle has posted an alert for a serious flaw in its WebLogic Server and Express products. The issue lies within the Apache Connector component used by both systems, and attack code is publicly available.Oracle warned that the attack could be remotely exploited by an attacker without the need for any authentication information, and could give control over the targeted system.
 << Other Details >>

Oracle, SAP War Continues :
 << Oracle Vs SAP 1 >>
 << Oracle Vs SAP 2 >>
 << Oracle Vs SAP 3 >>

Oracle updates free Berkeley DB :

Oracle announced new releases of Oracle Berkeley DB, Oracle Berkeley DB XML and Oracle Berkeley DB Java Edition. But in real scenario, High seviority bugs may or may not be taken on High priority.
Below are few examples where we can have ‘High priority & Low Seviority’ and ‘High Seviority and Low Priority’ bugs.

1] High Severity And Low Priority----If there is an application , if that application crashes after multiple use of any functionality
Means High Severity because application crashed, Low Priority because no need to debug right now you can debug it after some days.

2] High Priority And Low Severity :
If the logo of any site is wrongly spelled, Priority is high but severity is low.
Because it effect the name of the site, it is important to do quick.
It is not going to crash because of spell change, so severity low.

Oracle 11g Pl/Sql new Features:

Nice Explanation with examples :
http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/PlsqlNewFeaturesAndEnhancements_11gR1.php

Interesting Queries & Topics:
==>>>
In Oracle 11g , No need to use the dual table for getting the next value or current value of a sequence.
Eg:
‘Select Sequence_Name.NextVal into ln_seq from dual’
can be replaced by
ln_seq:= Sequence_Name.NextVal;

==>>>
The following query gives you the Schema name , Connection Status , OS User , Terminal and the number of sessions :

*************************************************************************************

SELECT
DBA_USERS.USERNAME "Schema_name",
DECODE(V$SESSION.USERNAME, NULL, 'NOT CONNECTED', 'CONNECTED') "Connection_Status",
NVL(OSUSER, '-') "OS_User",
NVL(TERMINAL,'-') "Terminal",
SUM(DECODE(V$SESSION.USERNAME, NULL, 0,1)) "No_Of_Sessions"
FROM
DBA_USERS, V$SESSION
WHERE
DBA_USERS.USERNAME = V$SESSION.USERNAME (+)
GROUP BY
DBA_USERS.USERNAME,
DECODE(V$SESSION.USERNAME, NULL, 'NOT CONNECTED', 'CONNECTED'),
OSUSER,
TERMINAL
ORDER BY 1 ;

*************************************************************************************
==>>>

What is the difference between ? and HELP?
There is no difference. Both "?" and HELP will read the SYSTEM.HELP table (if available) and shows help text on the screen.
To use the help facility, type HELP followed by the command you need to learn more about. For example, to get help on the SELECT statement, type:

Help Select
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the difference between @ and @@?
The @ (at symbol) is equivalent to the START command and is used to run SQL*Plus command scripts.
A single @ symbol runs a script in the current directory (or one specified with a full or relative path, or one that is found in you SQLPATH or ORACLE_PATH).

@@ will start a sqlplus script that is in the same directory as the script that called it (relative to the directory of the current script). This is normally used for nested command files.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the difference between & and &&?
"&" is used to create a temporary substitution variable and will prompt you for a value every time it is referenced.
"&&" is used to create a permanent substitution variable as with the DEFINE command and the OLD_VALUE or NEW_VALUE clauses of a COLUMN statement. Once you have entered a value it will use that value every time the variable is referenced.

Eg: SQL> SELECT * FROM TAB WHERE TNAME LIKE '%&TABLE_NAME.%';
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is the difference between ! and HOST?
Both "!" and "HOST" will execute operating system commands as child processes of SQL*Plus. The difference is that "HOST" will perform variable substitution (& and && symbols), whereas "!" will not. (Note: use "$" under MVS, VMS, and Windows environments, not "!")

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-->>
Sreekanth Babu Vakiti

Oracle Update

Hi,

This Month's Topics :

1) Release of Oracle 11G.
2) Certification Fee gets cheaper.
3) Compare Oracle with SqlServer&DB2.
4) Integrating Oracle Spatial with Google Earth
5) Oracle is Market Leader Again
6) Technical Talk ( Dynamic SQL)

1) Release of Oracle 11G.
On July 11, 2007, in a live launch event from New York City, Oracle unveiled Oracle Database 11g—the next generation of enterprise information management that will help you innovate faster through better business insight.
Oracle Database 11g
Oracle Database 11g, building on Oracle's unique ability to deliver Grid Computing, gives Oracle customers the agility to respond faster to changing business conditions, gain competitive advantage through technology innovation, and reduce costs.
With Oracle Database 11g you can:
Adopt new technology faster with Real Application Testing
Manage more data for less with advanced compression and partitioning
Simplify systems by storing all your data in the Oracle Database with Oracle Fast Files
Maximize the ROI of disaster recovery resources with new Data Guard advances
Free critical personnel for strategic tasks with management automation

2) Certification Fee gets cheaper( Discount by oracle + $ Value down ) :
40% DISCOUNT ON ORACLE CERTIFICATION

Exam Papers List Price After 40% Discount ed Price
Introduction to SQL Rs. 3840/- Rs. 2304/-
All other OCP Exam Papers Rs.5050/- Rs. 3030/-

For further details, www.oracle.com/education/certification.
Or
Contact: mailto:Edus_in@Oracle.com

3) Compare Oracle with SqlServer&DB2..

Oracle Vs DB2
Edison Group: Oracle Saves 38% in Database Management Cost over IBM After completing a laboratory study of standard RDBMS administrative tasks, measuring for efficiency (time it takes to complete tasks), analysts at the Edison Group found that "Oracle Database 10g Release 2 can provide organizations using the product with 38% annual administration-related time savings." The Edison Study: Comparative Management Cost Study: Oracle Database 10g Release 2 and IBM DB2 Universal Database 9.1, is now available.

4) Integrating Oracle Spatial with Google Earth
Learn how to use Oracle Locator/Oracle Spatial, GeoServer, and Google Earth to create a seamless, robust system for location-enabled BI.
http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/lokitz-spatial-geoserver.html

5) Oracle is Market Leader Again
Gartner 2006 Worldwide RDBMS Market Share Reports 47.1% Share for Oracle
Gartner has published their market share numbers by operating system for 2006 based on total software revenues.
